Directed by John David Coles, award winning director and producer of House Of Cards and Homeland.
The Choice delves into the remarkable journey of Holocaust survivor and renowned psychologist,
Dr. Edith Eger, whose personal story becomes a guiding light for Israeli mother Iris Haim during her darkest hours.
Iris leans on Edie’s memoir, The Choice: Embrace the Possible, after her son Yotam is taken
hostage by Hamas terrorists during the October 7th attacks. It offers her solace and strength,
helping her stay positive while he is held captive. However, when Yotam is accidentally killed with
fellow hostages by the IDF, Iris—and the nation—plunge into despair. The heartbreaking tragedy
triggers civil unrest and national morale plummets. With her family and country crumbling around
her, Iris once again turns to Edie for guidance.
At the heart of the film is Edie’s profound message on the power of choice, a theme that resonates
deeply throughout the narrative. Edie’s belief emphasizes that no matter the circumstances—
whether imprisoned physically, as she was during the Holocaust, or mentally, as she struggles with
her own personal battles after the war—the power to choose one's response remains a critical path
to freedom. This message, ultimately guides Iris through her devastating grief, helping her forgive.
Utilizing a rich tapestry of materials, including archival footage, public appearances, audio
recordings, and personal writings, the film seamlessly transitions between Edie and Iris’s gripping
narratives. Jumping between past and present, viewers witness the power of Edie’s teachings on
forgiveness and resilience—and their ripple effects across the generations.
Eye-opening and timely, The Choice is a testament to the enduring capacity of the human spirit,
offering a path to healing for individuals and nations alike.
