A new 4K restoration
This iconic film tells the story of Jewish immigrants who come to the Lower East Side of New York City in 1896 from Eastern Europe, and who live on Hester Street in Manhattan. Gitl (Carol Kane, Nominated for an Academy award for her role) has just arrived in America from Russia with her son. She has come to meet her husband, Jake (Steven Keats), who has been in the States for some time and is comfortably settled. While Gitl struggles to find her place in this country, she clashes with Jake, who has fully embraced their new homeland.
In 2011, Hester Street was added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
